ROMANS CHAPTER 5
We have been reconciled and then justified, but what does this mean? To grasp it, we must first understand what redemption truly signifies—not from a modern shopping spree perspective, but from the viewpoint of the first century.
Previously in Romans…
In chapter one Paul opens our eyes to how corrupt our souls are, Yeshua liberated us from sin, but even today, many do not condone sin, and even sponsored it, created “Church” programs to legitimize it. This is because, even though Yeshua set us free, it is from us to decide to live a life with Him, to abide in Him.
Then in chapter two, Paul reminded the Jews that being born and Israeli does not guarantee our devotion to Yahweh. Following Torah by matters of tradition was not its intention. Torah introduces us to an Elohim that wants to have an interactive relationship with His people. That is why the Shema remind us daily that we should remember we have One Elohim, the only True Elohim, Yahweh, who we should love with everything we are, with our heart, our body and all we are represented by. It is not just a list of rules to follow to get to Him, we get to Him to be able to follow His rules. And we neither able to enforce His laws if we are not willing to follow it in Yahweh’s terms.
Next in chapter three, Paul has not forgot about us Gentiles, we are called to abide in Yeshua, and the way to do this, is by remembering everything Israel has gone through, so we do not make the same mistake, and still, we are. By neglecting to live a life of devotion based in Yahweh’s loving shepherding, forgetting that the failures of Israel do not nullify, neither Yahweh’s faithfulness, promises or His righteousness, nor even His commandments.
In chapter four we are presented with a challenge. We are to hold on to faith, not to our skills, or to our accomplishments, but to the promises of Yahweh. As Abraham and King David, who believed in Yahweh’s promises even though the circumstances around them, and the mistakes the continuously made, did not reflect a path to the fulfillment of those promises.
With all that has been recapitulated—our sordid journey from corruption to liberation, our repeated failures and Yahweh’s unwavering faithfulness, the relentless struggle between tradition and true devotion, and the sobering truth that we, both Jew and Gentile, are utterly powerless to redeem ourselves—one urgent question demands our attention. The stakes have never been higher, the path never more fraught with peril and hope entwined. Are you ready to confront what redemption truly means, to wrestle with its demands and its promise?
Then, let’s begin.
Why have we been justified?
Romans 5:1-2 LSB —
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we boast in hope of the glory of God.
Justification is central to understanding the logic of redemption as described by Paul. We have been justified by faith, which means we have been declared righteous before Yahweh, not by our own merit or actions, but through faith in Yeshua. This justification is not something we could achieve ourselves, because our inclination toward sin makes us powerless to reconcile ourselves with Yahweh. Our sinful nature governs us, and without divine intervention, we remain separated from God.
The purpose of the Law was not fully grasped because we have not sought the Spirit’s guidance in understanding it. True justification requires us to surrender our will to Yahweh, acting not from empty words but from sincere repentance and genuine faith. Through this act of faith, we gain peace with Yahweh through our Master Yeshua the Messiah. Paul’s message is clear: justification is both a gift and a call. It reconnects us to Yahweh and ushers us into a relationship characterized by peace, grace, and hope, all made possible through the Messiah.
Therefore, having been justified by faith we have peace with Yahweh through our Master Yeshua the Messiah
Here in chapter five, Paul is explaining to us Gentiles the logic of redemption, and he is also reminding the Jews as a refresh, because they have forgotten what redemption is. Why have we been redeemed for, what does that even mean?
This we will be able to understand with the following verse:
14 who gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from all lawlessness, and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good works.
Titus 2:14 • Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)
Been redeemed means that we have been reconciled from lawlessness, because before Yeshua, we were slave to sin, since we neglected the wisdom of Yah. As Adam gave up his position of ruler to become a slave to sin, which not only affected him, but all mankind. We have given up our identity in Yahweh, to create our own identity. From an image of Yahweh to the image of Sin, — which means missing the target.
In both ancient times and in some countries today, individuals may give up their freedom and become servants until their debt is resolved. Although this practice is not common in many modern societies, the use of credit cards can also result in financial obligations that last for extended periods.
In those days, individuals who relinquished their freedom to settle a debt became members of their creditor’s household, not as family, but as servants. The debtor was obligated to provide them with shelter and food throughout their period of service, until the debt was fully repaid.
Credit cards are not so, if you owe money to them, you are still on your own, you still must pay your rent, buy your sustainment and everything else, the debt is just an added debt to what you already own. Imagine that the creditors come to your home and take away your kids, your spouse and send you to a concentration camp to work almost twenty-four seven until your debt is paid off, they own you until death, if you are unable to pay off. Then imagine for some unexplainable —wonderful— miracle, one person decided to take all your debts and pay them in full. That’s the Kinsman Redeemer’s Law. Given by Yahweh, to protect the needy.
In Biblical times this is what redemption meant. And that is where studying the Kinsman’s Law is important. Without this understanding you cannot grasp the importance and the heart of the Laws given by Yahweh and how it is applied to His promises. Remember, His Laws are a shadow of the fulfillment of His promises, which are fulfilled through the Messiah. And to understand what the Messiah accomplished, it is required of us that we understand and study His Law.
47 ‘Now if the means of a sojourner or of a foreign resident with you becomes sufficient, and a brother of yours becomes so poor with regard to him as to sell himself to a sojourner who resides with you or to the descendants of a sojourner’s family, 48 then he shall have redemption right after he has been sold. One of his brothers may redeem him, 49 or his uncle or his uncle’s son may redeem him, or one of his blood relatives from his family may redeem him; or if he prospers, he may redeem himself.
Leviticus 25:47-49 • Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)
Take the Law given by Yahweh to the people of Israel, which by His mandate wanted us to meditate in it day and night (see Deuteronomy 6:9), redemption was provided even through our own demise. Yahweh made sure for the people not to oppress the orphan, the widow or the poor.
How Redemption looks from Yahweh’s Perspective?
Now let’s break down from the Law of Redemption (Leviticus 25:8-55), what did Yeshua came to do for us.
- Yeshua needed to be born from a woman, because the kinsman must be part of the family, in this case, Yahweh needed to become flesh, to redeem flesh. But the seed needed to come from the woman, not from Adam, hence the woman needed to be a maiden, which in Biblical terms needed to be a young woman who has not known man, —a virgin.
- To be able to redeem, the kinsman redeemer needed to pay the reminder balance of what’s owe in full, to restore the one who owns for their freedom and bring them to the dignity of their kin. Since the wages of sin is death, Yeshua needed to die and conquer death.
- Yeshua not only became our kinsman redeemer, but He also acted as our Year of Jubilee, before Yahweh, we were restored our full original identity, which we sold, as Esau sold his firstborn right for a red stew, we did for a fruit back in the garden of Eden. All we have lost, Yahweh redeemed back as Yeshua, the Salvation of Yahweh.
Yahweh established the path of redemption, not based on our feelings or understanding, but according to His divine perspective. It is defined by His terms, not ours.
God didn’t pay a price for us because He owes anything to sin, He paid up the price because you belong to Him in the first place. Did Yahweh needed to send His Son to die for us? No, —He didn’t—, we are the ones who get ourselves into this mess, we are the one who gave authority over us to the principalities. He didn’t have to redeem us. And this is the beauty of our Elohim.
We often complain about the Laws established by Yahweh, but we never sit down to realize that Yahweh made a covenant between us, humanity and Himself. He did not only make laws for us as sign of obedience, but He also bind Himself in covenant agreement through that same Law. The reason there were two tablets of the Law is because there was an agreement between two parties. Both sides agree to abide by the terms of the agreement. Yahweh bind Himself, and not only between Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, but with the heavens and the earth, that He is going to keep His part of the agreement.
By giving the Laws of Redemption and writing them down in stone, then through promise, in our hearts, He demonstrated His love for us. Yeshua Himself needed to become part of us to be able to redeem us. He needed to be from the seed of Eve, because He made a covenant with the principalities and authorities of this world. But the truth of the matter is that he didn’t have to do any of these.
We broke our covenant with Him by lusting after other gods, the gods of idolatry, lust and power. So, does Yahweh had to redeemed us the way He did, having His Son dying on a cross in a brutal manner? No.
Then, —why did He do it?
And this is why…
Romans 5:3 LSB —
3 And not only this, but we also boast in our afflictions, knowing that affliction brings about perseverance;
How this verse explains it? Bear with me. Yahweh didn’t have to redeemed us; He made a covenant to Himself with us as a witness to accomplish this. —Still, why did He do it? — Because…
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:16 • Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)
He did it because we are His precious possession. And how do we know He will abide by His promises to us. That my friend is why we have Israel, as a witness of His love and compassion towards a nation that He call His own. The most persecuted nation, a nation that has received unexplainable hatred. A nation that is targeted for extermination, from Muslim nations, European nations and even through some who called themselves “Christians”.
And still, Israel stands, with the festivals established by Yahweh, their language and customs. It is obvious is not because of their charm and tracked record, but because Yahweh is faithful.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:11-12 • Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)
As Israel, we do not deserve the mercy of our loving Father. We do not deserve Yeshua. Much less, we do not deserve His Ruach Ha’Kodesh (Holy Spirit). But still He offered them to us through Yeshua Ha’Mashiach, Jesus the Messiah. Not because of us, but because Who He is.
He grafted us in into the nation of Israel, so we can enjoy the mercy of His redemption. The kinsman redemption is not available for sojourners, but those who belongs to the nation. Those who rejects Israel, they are not rejecting a political structure or a man-made country. They are rejecting the Word of Yahweh, His promises and His undeserving Love.
Yahweh does not prevent us to feel the ripples of sin, because He wants us to grow in faith, and because He wants to save as many as He can. He is patient.
Romans 5:3-5 LSB —
3 And not only this, but we also boast in our afflictions, knowing that affliction brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not put to shame, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
He has equipped us to conquer sin, to conquer our fleshly desires, –lust–. Stop asking why He does what He does, or how He does it. Instead, just raise your arms in reverence, because we should not question Yahweh. Again, we do not deserve His Unending Love, we get to receive this gift, because of Who He Is, and what He has promised.
Romans 5:6-11 —
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man, though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only this, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
We are in no position to question Yahweh, as Job, evil happened to him not for anything he did, and being a faithful servant did not guarantee him a life without struggles. Job had many questions for Yahweh, and Yahweh did not have to answer any of them, instead He answer this way:
2 “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Now gird up your loins like a man, and I will ask you, and you make Me know! 4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you know understanding, 5 who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the line on it? 6 On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone, 7 When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Job 38:2-7 • Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)
We will never understand why Yahweh does things the way He does things, but one thing is for sure, anything He do is perfect, after all, He created everything and keep everything in order from before and after time. The Alpha and the Omega, the alef and the taw (tav). And trusting Him is faith.
but we also boast in our afflictions
Still! You keep asking —why?
Romans 5:12-14 LSB —
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the trespass of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
For some reason, many think that is not fair that we must suffer because of the sin of one man. And that is true, —we are not judged because of what Adam did.
—Come again?—. We are not being judge because what Adam did, we are judge because we have never accepted Yahweh’s conditions of redemption.
and so death spread to all men, because all sinned
We are still bound by sin, even though Yahweh has offered many times a way of redemption. Yes, Yahweh started with the nation of Israel, but from millennia, anyone was able to be grafted in into Israel. Think Rahab, Ruth and even the Egyptians were accepted to become part of the Assembly of Yahweh (Deuteronomy 23).
All the enemies of Israel have heard about the wonders Yahweh have done for them, and still they rose against them, as is still today. Taking what belong to Yahweh. The land that Yahweh gave to Israel, was a gift, that belongs to Him. And He made it clear in the law of the redemption of the land.
23 ‘The land, moreover, shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are but sojourners and foreign residents with Me. 24 Thus for every piece of land of your possession, you shall provide for the redemption of the land.
Leviticus 25:23-24 • Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)
Today we still think we have the last words in the conflict of the Middle East. The eternal conflict that has existed for over 4,000 years, simply because we do not want to recognize the land of Israel. The United Nations keep playing god over that territory, —so did Rome in about 2,000 years ago, —so did the Ottoman Empire about 1,000 years ago, —so did Britain and Italy in more recent times. —And now the United States. All in the name of peace, but peace is never accomplished.
No matter how much power our governments and religious leaders think they have, one thing is for sure, Yahweh’s remain supreme, Yeshua is our King of Kings, and all His promises come to pass, as they are revealed in Scriptures.
What these verses does not mean is that the Law brings death, —in the contrary—, but instead means that our dreaded path was exposed by the Law, provoking death to reign until Moses, but through Moses the Law was restored and dead lost its grip through the Passover lamb to a small country that was not a country yet, but was an established nation in the eyes of the Eternal Elohim.
Romans 5:14 LSB —
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the trespass of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
Yeshua broadens the reach of the Law, which is now available for all who claim to love Yahweh, allowing them to know, in their heart and in their eyes, what the will of Yahweh is. Amen.
4 The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 5 but whoever keeps His word, truly in him the love of God has been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: 6 the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.
1 John 2:4-6 • Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)
Is all because He promised
Romans 5:15-17 LSB —
15 But the gracious gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the gracious gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification. 17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
Because of the fall of Adam, our acts of righteousness were clouded by the one we were slaved to. Through Yeshua, our image on Eden has been restored, our sins are clouded by the one who redeemed us with blood.
As sin reigned, through the sacrifices of bulls, goats or lambs, our sins were forgiven, for a period of time, because the agent through where the sacrifices were made, was a flawed man, and all the elements were temporal, bound to the limitations of time. But Yeshua, because He is eternal, He was able to redeem us once and for all, all the elements are not bound by the same limitations of the previous agreement.
Paul then repeats the argument for our benefit. We, once, were slave to sin because Adam voluntarily surrenders his firstborn rights over creation. But Yeshua, taking the place of Adam, receiving the status of firstborn of creation, He restore for us the right we once surrendered.
Romans 5:18-19 LSB —
18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. 19 For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were appointed sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be appointed righteous.
Before Moses, the Law of Yahweh were not written in stone, the Law was in the heart of those who know him. We know this to be, because of the act of Abel and Cain, who offered sacrificial offering to Yahweh, Noah brought a count of seven of each species of clean animals inside the ark then build an altar to Yahweh after the flood, and offer sacrifices; Abraham was continuously building altars and offering sacrifices to Yahweh, but little by little the knowledge about Yahweh diminishes. Judgement was ignored, because of the ignorance at the time.
Then Yahweh restored His Law at mount Sinai, is then where judgement was applied with severity, sin increased because not all who heard about Yahweh knew exactly what displeased Him. And because we grew in our love for our sinful nature, we rebelled against Yah, our hearts were harder than stone. The Law exposed our hypocrisy.
But Yahweh promised:
31 “Behold, days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will cut a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant which I cut with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, but I was a husband to them,” declares Yahweh. 33 “But this is the covenant which I will cut with the house of Israel after those days,” declares Yahweh: “I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 And they will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know Yahweh,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares Yahweh, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
Jeremiah 31:31-34 • Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)
Yahweh has renewed our hearts, inscribing His Law within us as we grow. We have no excuse for not living a life of obedience to Him, for He has generously provided us with Yeshua as His Lamb of Redemption and High Priest. Additionally, He has equipped us with His Holy Spirit, who guides us into all righteousness.
Romans 5:20-21 LSB —
20 Now the Law came in so that the transgression would increase, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The work of redemption has always been available, but sin reign, we fail as priests, and as a nation. We were supposed to be set‑apart, —holy—, for Yahweh, but we whore after other gods. Yeshua came to be the perfect sacrifice, the perfect High Priest and the perfect descendent from the House of David, who’s reign will never cease.
Conclusion
From the beginning of time, Yahweh has always wanted to have a close relationship with us. He made a covenant with the powers of the earth, to whom we gave up our firstborn right, and Yahweh reminded these powers He is going to restore us back, He promised to redeem us. He promised Abraham, that Abraham was going to become the father of many nations, as well as to Isaac, and to Jacob.
He liberated Israel from Egypt, who became their oppressors and redeemed them with the blood of a lamb in Passover, then He brought them into the wilderness to make a covenant with them. But Israel never kept their end of the bargain.
Yahweh made another promise through the prophets, that a suffering servant (Isaiah 53) will come to restore His name on His people, and to bring the nations close to Him, not because of Israel, but because of His Name, He needed to restore the Name that has been blaspheme constantly.
This has been fulfilled through the rising of Yeshua’s name, Yeshua, which is a short of Yehoshua, that means — Yahweh Saves. Through the name of Yeshua, Yahweh restored his name, His authority and His will with a Kingdom that has no end.
May Yahweh bless you and keep you, May Yahweh allow His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you, May Yahweh lift His face towards you and grant to you, His peace.
