We are saved by our belief in those promises. More specifically, to the promise of our Messiah Yeshua. But there’s a problem we need to confront wholeheartedly—we are to fight against the ruling of sin and surrender to the One who liberated us from the bondage of sin.

With that clarified, let’s begin!

Romans Chapter 7

Which Law Do I Follow?
If Any at All!

Romans 7:1-6 LSB ~ Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is master over a person as long as he lives? For the married woman has been bound by law to her husband while he is living, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man. So, my brothers, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were constrained, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

At the end of chapter 6, Paul explains that we are no longer bound by the law of sin. Because these passages are divided into chapters, it’s vital to follow Paul’s argument closely; reading Romans in isolated sections can lead to misunderstandings, as history has shown. Staying focused on the overall message helps clarify which law applies to us and which one we have been freed from.

For our convenience, in this commentary I started to separate the two with the uppercase Law —which is Torah— and the lowercase “law” —which could be the law of sin or the traditions of men—. Paul very explicitly says that all believers are mastered by the Law for as long as we live. Because of this, Paul draws an illustration that’s only true if we are under the Law of Yahweh. Paul is referring about the Law of Marriage and is drawing a comparison how once we were bound under the law of sin because we were married metaphorically to death, but we are no longer under this law of sin, because Yeshua killed the dominion of death, by faith.

Since Paul knows that many will take advantage of this illustration to use it as an excuse to deny our responsibility under a covenantal agreement between Yeshua (Yahweh with us) and us, then Paul continues with the following statement:

Romans 7:7 LSB ~ What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! Rather, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law. For I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “YOU SHALL NOT COVET.”

We must exercise caution and avoid jumping to that conclusion, as we are not exempt from the Law of Yahweh. However, Paul makes a startling statement, asserting that we have become victims—believing that our oppressor is the Law of Yahweh. In reality, we have unintentionally reattached ourselves to the law of sin, convinced that we are serving the Law of Yahweh. Wait, what?! Could you clarify that again?

Romans 7:8-11 LSB ~ But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, worked out in me coveting of every kind. For apart from the Law sin is dead. Now I was once alive apart from the Law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died; and this commandment, which was to lead to life, was found to lead to death for me. For sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.

What a rollercoaster of words, what is happening here? So, let me see if I get this straight, the Law is not sin, but sin has taken advantage of the Law? I’m about to have an aneurysm. Let’s break this down slowly.

Paul has emphasized that the Law is essential for understanding what constitutes sin. Given this, how can sin exploit the Law’s presence to lead me into further sin and ultimately cause my spiritual death?

First, we need to understand the timing of Paul’s speech — specifically, the “when” he is referring to. Paul is guiding us to a period when the Law of Yahweh was not ingrained in humanity’s hearts, a time when sin reigned unchecked and without restraint. You might assume he was describing his contemporary era, the time he was writing, but in reality, he is taking us on a historical journey. Imagine the passages from Genesis chapters 3 through 11, from the fall of mankind and the descent into sin’s dominion, to the events of Noah’s Ark and the Tower of Babel.

And they said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

Genesis 11:4 • Versión Reina Valera 1960 (RV60)

Consider the statement: “Let us make for ourselves a name.” This marks the first recorded instance of humanity coming together in unity, albeit with misguided intentions. The people of Shinar, originally not from the region, migrated there under the leadership of Nimrod, a formidable figure regarded as the first to claim divinity in political matters. Nimrod aspired to construct a tower reaching the heavens; at that time, it was believed that both the heavens and the earth were supported by pillars. His intention was to build a structure capable of holding back the waters above—the heavens—in anticipation of any future judgment from Yahweh upon humanity.

Notably, Noah was still alive at this point, so people were aware of Yahweh’s promise to creation.

And Yahweh smelled the soothing aroma; and Yahweh said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again strike down every living thing as I have done. There is a clear pattern: Nimrod used political power to distort truth, mislead others, and defy Yahweh’s authority. Influenced by larger forces, people were unaware of Yahweh’s Law. When their language was confused, humanity was dispersed across the earth, showing that another flood was unnecessary for this outcome.

Today we use other forms of manipulations that we should be careful not to fall into.

The Law is too difficult to follow. This is often the first excuse that you hear from doctrines that do not want to be under anyone’s rules, but their own. There are moments of genuine devotion, such as when Israel faithfully followed Yahweh’s commands to build the tabernacle, making a dwelling for His presence among them. Yet, we also face times of failure, wandering in defeat toward our own Babylon—seasons of sorrow, struggle, and adversity.

But despite all, Yahweh has been faithful, merciful and full of loving kindness. Yahweh, not considering Himself be the Most‑High Elohim, He became flesh, providing us a lamb of redemption, and by the blood He shed as Yeshua, He gave us new life. And by His love, He gifted us with His Ruaḥ HaKodesh (Holy Spirit), who guide us as a column of clouds by day, and a column of fire by night.

The Law of Yahweh is a vital cornerstone of our lives. If you have been misled by a deceptive doctrine claiming otherwise, allow me to remind you of Yeshua’s own words.

Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:19 • Versión Reina Valera 1960 (RV60)

Always remember you are no longer a slave to sin, for you are alive in Yeshua’s love—love that embodies the Torah.

I sincerely hope this Bible commentary brings you great blessing. My prayer is that Yahweh reveals to you His immense love for you through these reflections. Until next time, as we delve into Romans 8.

“May Yahweh bless you and keep you; May Yahweh make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; May Yahweh lift up His face towards you and give you Shalom.”

Shalom, Shalom

We must exercise caution and avoid jumping to that conclusion, as we are not exempt from the Law of Yahweh.
